I made this game in 2004, and is one component to the Tomorrow is Forever project. I spent most of the time getting it functional and getting the story elements in there, because the idea was to reveal pieces of our story through the game that aren't told through the music or videos.

A great deal of research went into getting the aesthetics as authentic as possible to be true to an 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. I played a lot of NES games to get a feel for what was possible with the technology at the time, and went as far as to recreate our music using software emulation of the 2A03 sound chip by utilizing MML.

Part of the challenge of adhering to the 256x240 pixel resolution was maintaining recognizable images. Since I originally used renders from the 3D models we used in the videos, when they got scaled down to 16x16 or 32x32 pixels, they more closely resembled garbage.

To compensate from the loss of quality, I stretched the original models way out of proportion, keeping things like the heads extremely large, so that facial details would remain visible.

The game is based off an engine found in the book, Flash MX Game Design Demystified, by Jobe Makar, and is really the first time I got my hands dirty with Actionscript.

It utilizes XML files to load the levels, which, were constructed in one day, and unfortunately in my opinion, shows, very much so past level 2.

Taking what I now know about Flash, Actionscript, and XML, I have been thinking of revisiting the project since there is a lot in place already.

revisit the project! there
