New Interactive Projects

I have two small announcements to make here about some side projects I've started. The first is a new Flash based platform game I've started working on with a friend. We'll be putting up a blog for that project in the next week or so.

The other is a project called Tumblhog which is a silly Flash visualization of some of the wonderful things you can find on Tumblr. This will probably go live at the end of the month.

That's all for now, I've been really busy lately, but am finding some small cracks to fit in some creative stuff again.

Twitter Helps Atlanta Citizens Find Gas

Twitter helped Atlanta residents locate which gas stations had gas when and how long the lines were. Who knew what a useful tool twitter could become in a situation like this. I have a car myself and was on E just looking for a place to fill up and decided I would head home with what I had left until I heard some news. Luckily the AJC website had a link to a Twitter search with the phrase "#atlgas".

Can't Run MAMP From Different Mac Account?

MAMP only runs for the user who installed it.

The fix:
Fire up Terminal and change the ownership by typing:
sudo chown -R new_owner /Applications/MAMP

Do it again to change back on the other account.

1 Week with iPhone 2.0

It's not what it does, it's how you use it that counts. We all know about the app store and the new iPhone 3G, so I'll skip past what everyone else has already said about the device and describe how I'm using the original iPhone with the 2.0 software update.

Killer App? The App store. The applications available for the device from day 1 have been amazing. Sure, you can put an image of a cow on your phone that moos every once in awhile and fill your phone up with iBeer, but there are a few standout apps I feel are worth mentioning.

Mac Subversion Client

Finally, a friendly looking mac subversion client. Versions, http://www.versionsapp.com/ is a mac SVN client that looks very, well, mac like. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks friendly enough for designers and developers alike to use.

Flash CS3 Tip: Toggle Code Hint Language

I worked on an AS2 File a month or so back and must have enabled some option to show AS2 code hints and it's been driving me banannas because I almost always write AS3 code now and keep getting AS2 hints.

Anyway, the setting isn't found in preferences, it's in the actionscript editor in the left hand sidebar in the dropdown menu. Select the language you're editing. D'oh!!

MAMP Does Not Work After Force Quit

Yesterday I lost power while I was running MAMP, and when it came back it could not connect. I've experienced this several times when I had to force quit the application and as a result have folders labeled notsooldmamp to access my old htdocs folders.

I just discovered a workaround however! If you launch MAMP, go to your preferences, uncheck the options to start/shutdown server on startup, things should be up and running again. This is apparantly a known issue that will be fixed in the next major release of MAMP.

Smoothie Animated CSS Menu (no javascript!)

So I occasionally visit the Surfin Safari blog, which is the Webkit developers blog (which is the nightly build version of the Apple Safari browser). The past few months, they have been making huge strides in pushing this browser forward. No doubt the iPhone which is powered by a flavor of Safari has been the motivation behind it.

Wide or Weird Fonts in OS X

I just ran into this issue: I installed some variations of the Helvetica font, and it screwed up other instances where the regular Helvetica was used on my system.

The fix: Go into font book and disable the recent fonts you installed by ctrl or right-clicking on them. Restart any apps where the fonts look wacky and you should be good to go.
